finedini000000 Caffe Carrera On La Cienega's well-klmwn Restaurant Row, you'll discover Caffe Carrera. Caffe Carrera is Ricardo Carrera's inaugural venture in Beverly Hills. The fresh, warm bread round, made on the premise, is served with a dipping sauce of olive oil with chopped garlic and fresh basil. On my first visit, I began with the Penne Palermo ($8.95), with grilled chicken breast, spinach, and a touch of cream. Often this type of pasta can be too rich or heavy. The success of this dish is due to the addition of garlic and the spar- ing use of cream. The popular Sicilian meatloaf ($14.95) served with a special tomato and shitake mushroom sauce with a hint of parmesan was flavorful; the meat was surprisingly tender, the polenta and vegetable side dishes were well pre- pared. The lean ground sirloin is bound together with parmesan cheese. The Sicilian house red, Corvo Bianco, ($5/glass, $19/bottle) was a delicious accompaniment to the meat. I invited a few friends for my second visit. We began with the green lip mus- sels in a black pepper tomato sauce served over toasted bread squares ($12.95). Delicious! The texture of this dish was unique. We enjoyed dipping the 'house bread in the spicy sauce! The Insalata Vegetariana ($8.95), baby greens topped with grilled vegetables and avaca- do came with an excellent citrus house dressing. Made with lemon & orange juice, light on the oil, the Mediterranean constituents in our party loved the way the dressing accentuated the vegetables. The one American in the party, felt the dressing was too tart. For the main course the grain fed New Zealand lamb ($18.95) was fantastic, melting in our mouths with .each bit. The good news is that the restaurant is now opened for patio seating. It's the per- fect outdoor, Italian experience Open M-F ll:30am-10pm, Sat 5:30pm- 10pm. 235 S.
