I pAo00 14 I BEVERLY HILLS NEWS From Desert to Hill00 lq Friars fete Charlton Heston for lifetime achievement here's no question about it, energy, enthusiasm and love produced one magical experience -- The Charlton Heston Lifetime Achievement Award from the Friars Club, an event held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Friars Abl:t (chairman) and most witty and highly intelligent gentleman, Steve Alien, emceed the program that com- bined highlights both of Charlton's career and personal life by friends and colleagues. And it just happened Steve and his ever-lovely wife Jayne Meadows were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary the night of the Haston tribute. Among those Te got to spend a moment or two with were Red Buttons and wife Alicia (Red's looking forward to doing Buttons on Broadway next year), famed writer Sidney Sheldon and his Aiexandra recently back from London, and guess what, Sidney has a new book coming out this SeptereJ0er. The only problem with reading a Sidney Sheldon book is that I can never put it down, and when I've finished, I'm so disappointed not to still be involved in the characters' lives. Sidney was recently honored with his own =star" on our Palm Springs "Walk of Fame" -- in front of Brentano's Book Shop. Others taking part in the Heston tribute included Roddy McDowell, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Ann Miller with her dear friend James Ooolit- tie. Ann's an incredible gal, with high energy and a real zest for life. She also adores and spends time at her other home in Sedona. And no wonder, it's one of the most beautiful places I've ever seen, with mountains almost red in color. Continuing on with the guest list...there was Jack Vaienti, Richard Paul, Deborah Raf- fin and Michael Viner (a terrific husband and wife team), Tony Curtis stopping traffic in a trendy designer black suit. He said he's very proud of daughter Jamie Lea Curtis. What a body that gal has -- if you've seen True L/as you know what I'm talking about. The evening was highlighted by Chartton Haston being escorted to the dais by a Marine Corps honor guard. There was a videotape of highlights of his film career and an introduction by former President Ronald Reagan. Bravos to Saul H. Burakoff, president of the Friars Club. Lydia, Charlton's wife of nearly 50 years, looked lovely in a regal purple ensemble. Thailians President's Club It was at the Ronaid Reagan Presidential Library that The Thaiians President's Club chose for the site of its special party. The entire evening was underwritten by the always generous Paula Kent Meehan who also underwrote the miniature replica of Ronald Reagan's Oval Office. The crowd was packed with Thailian members and friends, including Frances Allen, Sue and Jimmie Baker, Dodo and Mar- ','in Gayte, Steve Gerber and his beautiful actress wife Barbara Luna, the Burt Johnsons, the David Konises, Lola La Tourette, Dr. Irwin Lehrhoff, the Donald Lettieres, Joseph Mac- cola (he stars on Days of Our L/ves), Dick Mclnnes, Iris and Gene Rothstein, Earl Holli- man with actress Barbara Stuart, famed cast- ing director Marvin Paige, and at the helm of the evening, Ruta Lea with hubby Webb Lowe. To see the memorabilia and to read briefly about each one of these woman is like reliving history.
