briefs cont. from page 3 opinion on the project.had not changed since the council voted on the agreement in April. Councilmember Willie Brien said he would continue to support the recommendations of the fire and police chiefs. Mayor John Mirisch said the coun- cil had not done its homework in get- ting enough information and it would be worth exploring how to lessen the impacts. Bosse supported the independent study and said the money spent was worth it to have the information. A subcommittee will be formed to discuss what guidelines would need to be included in an independent study. The council will decide whether or not to pay for an independent study after the subcommittee outlines what would go into the study. According to the staff report, staff estimated an independent study could cost approximately $18,000. The program is expected to improve first responder wireless communication and provide safer 9-1-1 coverage. The equipment will be housed in a cabinet on the ground and the antefinas will be dis- tributed on Beverly Hills street light poles or free-standing poles. Those who use AT&T in the City would have better cell phone coverage within the City of Beverly Hills. The project comes at no extra cost to the City and AT&T will pay an annual licensing fee of $184,850 to the City's general fund, under the terms of the agreement. Bilak finalist as Recreation and Parks Commissioner The Beverly Hills City Council agreed to accept the recommendation to make Frances Bilak a Recreation and. Parks Commissioner at the council study ses- sion on Thursday. The council will vote formally on a resolution at" the June 4 formal meeting. "I'm very excited," said Bilak. "There's so much going on with Recreation and Parks. They're now remodel- ing Roxbury Park. We're Frances Bilak trying to get an [off-leash] dog park set up and it's such a great commission from the active adults and pre-schoolers, the farmer's market and Greystone." The interview panel was composed of Councilmembers Julian Gold and Nancy Krasne, commission Chair Robbie Anderson, and Vice Chair Howard Rosoff. The panel interviewed 18 applicants for the position formerly occupied by Planning Commissioner Alan Block. "It's the best commission possible for me to be on," said Bilak, who is an El Feuer celebrates his 90th birthday Mel Feuer, a volunteer with The Maple Counseling Center's Community Circle Program, celebrated his 90th Birthday on Tuesday, May 21. "I think, it's very important that in every commission you have a spectrum of the residents and I applaud the" commission for taking the step to have another parent of school age children oh the commission because it involves parks, and it involves sports and it involves teams." Gold said the applicants hacl tremen- dous talent. To reach their decision, the panel chose an applicant who was aTeam BeVerly Hills graduate and was not cur- rently serving on a commission. "Since the purpose of a commission is to encourage people to understand City Hall and then possibly run for City Hall, it behooves us to pick somebody that has never been in the commission process before," said Krasne. Mirisch said it was important to pick the best people regardless of having par- ticipated on Team Beverly Hills. "I think we've always tried to pick the best people and not take into consider- ation whether they have or haven't done something or have or haven't served.
