Q heal Daniel.Cohanim, D.D.S. Migraine Headache: Relief Treatment Don't put off treatment until the pain is irreversible. For many years migraine headaches have been a mystery to doctors, and a cause of great suffering to patients. Many treatments have been attempted with only limited relief. Over last 10 years, new data has revealed one common factor among these sufferers, break down of joint space in Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ.) TMJ connects your lower jawbone to your skull bone. Unlike your shoulder joint, which is a ball and socket joint, your TMJ is a sliding joint with a cushion in between called a disk. This disc (meniscus) is held in place by a rub- bery }ike string, called ligament. Normally this disk prevents bone to bone contact, while causing this liga- ment to lose its elasticity. As a result, the disk may "pop' out of alignment. With the disk out of place, joint space collapses allowing the lower jaw to move back and up, against a group of nerves, affecting areas from the fore- head down to the lower jaw. Over time these nerves and accom- panying blood vessels are crushed, causing extreme pain, and leading to irreversible destruction of the joint within a few years. bucked and missing Teeth; trauma such as whiplash from auto accident, athletic injury, childhood accident or blow to the head. How is TMJ treated? Over time these nerves and accompanying blood vessels are crushed, causing extreme pain, and leading to irreversible destruction of the joint within a few years. ' How would you know if you have TM,I problems? Popping, clicking or snapping sounds when you open and close; dif- ficulty opening or closing; tinnitus, (ringing in your ears), vertigo (dizzi- ness) and/or nausea; recurring ear- aches or migraine-like headaches for which the doctor can find no apparent cause; tense and/or painful neck and shoulder muscles; chronic fatigue and/or depression; crooked, crowded, In order to eliminate pain and future need for surgery, treatment must start at the first sign of the problem. Treatment consists of three separate parts. First a detailed examination and diagnosis, which should include cast of teeth, X-ray of the joint space, thorough dental exam, and exam of muscles in the face, mouth, neck and shoulder areas. Using this informa- tion, your dentist can determine if the joint space has collapsed in deciding what will correct the problem. Usually when bone deformities are not severe, non-surgical procedures can be used. Using a "snap in' appli- ance, the lower jaws is brought for- ward and downward, creating joint space of 1.5mm by 1.0ram. This will put the disk back in its normal posi- tion, allowing normal blood flow and nerve supply to return, and ligaments to heal. Improvement is felt within a few days. Many people who have suffered from migraine headaches have report- ed immediate relief after using this simple device. After the six weeks 'healing period', stabilization in this pain free position can be achieved. Even though these procedures can be expensive; they are almost always covered under your medical insur- ance, not dental! Don't put off this life changing treatment.
