Janitors Return to Work Beverly Hills is alleviated from demonstrations and traffic congestion. By Shirin Danielpour dan/ocs s0o on Wdst and Rodoo After three weeks of demonstrations and strikes, union janitors approved a new contract Monday, which would raise wages by more than 25c over the next three years. Wages for all janitors will increase by 60 cents a year the follow- ing two years. All janitors will also be receiving a $500 bonus immediately upon returning to work. As a last incen- tive, janitors will be granted an annual five day sick leave. "It was definitely worthwhile. We dramatically improved the wages. We had a 60% gain from the initial propos- al in April, and more than doubled in other areas," Blanca Gellegos, spokes- woman for Service Employees International Union, Local 1877, which represents 8,500 janitors in Los Angeles County, told the Beverly Hills Weekly.
