1]eal Catherine Zarrabi, D.C Hands On Approach to Lower Back Pain Chiropractic care has been proven as the most effective form of relief. After the common cold, low back pain is the most common reason for doctor visits. It is estimated that about 85% of the population will experience disabling low back pain at least once during their lifetime. That's almost all of us. The estimated cost of this problem in the U.S. is over $50 billion dollars a year. These losses include days lost from work, loss Of income, inability to perform normal daily activities. It's an especially frustrating problem because there is frequently no easy cure. However, of all the treatment modalities and therapeutic approach- es to this debilitating condition, Chiropractic care has been proven to be the most genuine source of relief. The Chiropractic "hands on" approach to low back pain is to address the cause of the problem by correcting your vertebral subluxa- tions. Vertebral Subluxation is a mis- aligned vertebrae (fixated joint) which causes interference with nerve impulses (messages) between your brain and your body. This subluxa- tion interferes with your body's prop- er function. By correcting the mis- aligned vertebrae your spine and its nerves, discs, and muscles will be healthier, stronger, and more stable. The standard medical approach to back pain varies depending on the severity of the condition. Muscle symptoms within a year or two of the operation and may return to the oper- ating table. Subluxation can be brought about by the normal stresses of everyday life, bad posture, improper ergonom- ics at work, lack or improper exercis- ||The Chiropractic "hands on" approach to low back pain is to address the cause of the problem by correcting your vertebral subluxations. relaxers, painkillers, rest and physical therapy such as traction, diathermy, ultrasound, hot packs and cold packs are sometimes used. This approach however only addresses the symp- toms and not the cause of the lower back problem. If the problem doesn't improve or worsens, then surgery may be performed. The medical approach is at times necessary, even back surgery has a place. However, many people who have had back surgery report a recurrence of their es, and trauma to the spine causing injury to the muscles, ligaments, and discs; all which may produce lower back pain. By correcting the mis- aligned vertebrae and restoring normal joint movement and proper nerve supply you will obtain relief from lower back pain and your body will function better. Once your chiropractor identifies a subluxation (fixated joint), he or she will correct the misaligned vertebrae by performing a spinal manipulation or adjustment. As the joint moves into place, pain is relieved and proper function is restored. Your Chiropractor will also educate you on taking preventative measures such as using correct ergonomics at work, nutritional counseling, adequate and proper exercise, and stress manage- ment. In 1994, the federal government and Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) established chiropractic as the most effective methods of care for acute adult low back pain. Chiropractors have helped millions of people with low back problems, often saving them from pain, disability, use of addicting and large doses of pain medication, and surgery. Anyone suffering from a back problem should see a chiroprac- tor to make sure there are no subluxa- tions and to have them corrected if found. This may make the difference between a life of ease, health and comfort or a life of pain, and disabili- ty. g Dr. Zarabi is a chiropractor who practices in West L.A.
