spo Norman Volleyball Team Sweeps Culver City BHHS Remains Undefeated in League Play. By Steven Herbert After paying tribute to their late teammate Ellis Hecht, Beverly Hills High School's boys' volleyball team took a major step toward the Ocean League championship by defeating second-place Culver City, 15-9, 15-5, 15-5, Thursday at the Swim-Gym. "This is the best we've played," coach Katie Washington said after her team improved to 9-0 in league play. Chris Gagan had 11 kills while Fouad Malamed and Billy Smyth had six each. Before the match, girls' volleyball coach Maria Weiss read players and team man- agers' comments about Hecht, killed in a March 17 traffic accident. "What was read was really what every player and manager contributed," Washington said. "When they heard that, it make them realize we really are dedicating this season to Ellis. They do feel his presence out there." The Normans will play host to Hawthorne today at 3:15 p.m. in the Swim-Gym in an Ocean League match. Beverly Hills has won 22 of its last 23 games. It recorded three-game sweeps of all five of its remaining opponents during the first half of league play. SpORTSWIRE Girls' Track Team Routs Morningside Anastasia Drannikova won the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Dejah Judelson the 100 high hurdles and 300 low hurdles as Beverly Hills defeated Morningside, 78-31, in a Bay League girls' track meet at Morningside Thursday. Rachel Deco (discus throw), Annie Grabarsky (800), Shauntay Green (100), Julia Moffitt (high jump) and Courtney Ray (long jump) were the other individual event winners for the Normans i4-2, 3-2). Ramtin Mahgerefteh won the i,600 and 3,20{) as Beverly Hills lost the boys' meet, 77-59. Ben Oh (110 high hurdles) and Marcus Sikors (pole vault) were its only other individual event winners as it fell to 3-3, 2-3. Despite Haben Hagos' victories in the high jump, long jump and triple jump, Beverly Hills lost to Peninsula, 82-54, in a Bay League boys' track meet at Peninsula March 30. David Housman (discus throw) and Jibril Raymo (40{) meters) were the Normans' other individual event winners. Beverly Hills lost the girls' meet 96-40. Katrina Smith won the 200, 400 and ran legs on the Normans' victorious 40{) and 1,600 relay teams. Lauren Brown (100) and Deco (discus throw) were Beverly Hills' other individual event winners. The Normans will visit Hawthorne today in a Bay League meet scheduled tO begin at 2:45 p.m. They will also compete in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays Saturday. High School Softball Hillary Gale and Kelli Serden each had two hits as Beverly Hills defeated Inglewood, 5-2, in an Ocean League game Friday at La Cienega Park. Freshman pitcher Zoe Irwin picked up her second victory as the Normans improved to 10-6, 4-2 in league play. Laurie Housman homered and Serden had two hits as Beverly Hills defeated Culver City, 4-3, in an Ocean League game at Culver City April 5. Freshman Laura Ames was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run. The Normans will play host to Morningside in an Ocean League game April 14 at La Cienega Park. Ames and junior Suzy Siebold combined on a no-hitter in Beverly Hills' 24-0 victory at Morningside March 22.
