FASHION THE INDIAN LOOK Are you interested in a new look that will keep you cool in all this hot weath- er we have been having? If you are then I certainly have an idea for you. And this idea is the "Indian look." This look consists of sarongs that can be worn as skirts, lightweight cotton shirts, and much much more. The trend of wearing Indian fabrics on an everyday basis has been tricking in and out of the fashion world for some time now. We have seen many mod- els and actresses dressed in various Indian fabrics made into any piece of clothing apparel that is craved. Stores such as Anthropology, on North Beverly Drive, have mastered the Indian motif. There are tons of Indian prints on skirts, shirts and bags, and on occasion shoes to match. When you flip through your magazines you are sure to see at least one of your favorite stars sporting this look. Madonna has been seen on occasion wearing Sari fabric and sometimes even a bindi, which is a decorative Indian sticker that is worn on the forehead. Another store that is stocked with an abundance of Indian apparel is Govinda's, located on 3764 Watseka Avenue just off of Venice Boulevard. This little hole in the wall boutique is in the middle of the Hare Krishna com- munity. Beautiful fabrics imported from India line the racks of Govinda's. Each fab- ric is unique and the designs range from very subtle patterns to very intricate embroidery. The fabrics are cut very large because they are meant to be worn as Saris, which wrap around the whole body. A little hint is to buy one or two fabrics and split them with your friends and make skirts out of them, you will get two for the price of one. Many of the fabrics are rather pricey so make sure you choose yours carefully. Govinda's also has many plain cotton skirts in just about any color you can dream of. They range from $9 to $12. Accessories such as silver and gold rings, bracelets, necklaces, and earrings are some of the treasures one may find in this wonderful place. Bags decorated with embroidery and various mirror appliques are also a must buy if you choose to venture into Govinda's. They are also stocked heavily with various bindis if you want to try the trend out for yourself. You are probably wondering what you are going to wear with a sari. Well that is easy. You wrap the fabric around your lower body, and the rest is up to you. One may wear a plain tank top and a pair of sandals with the beautiful fabric, and be ready to go. Another person may have an actual skirt or dress made out of the fabric and throw on a T-shirt and a jean jacket and be out the door, it is all up to you. One more place to find the prefect Indian apparel is Little India in Artesia. It is not hard to find and they have tons of stores. If you're going to venture to Artesia for the shopping be sure you plan on spending the whole day because each store has thousands of fabrics to choose from. So stay cool in the months to come and invest in a couple of saris that are light and flowy and still in with the trend.
