"I try to create a courtroom where people have a positive impression of the system and o.fjustice," said Stein, who was known to make the jurors laugh with her jokes and stories she often told in court. A CONTROVERSIAL DEPARTURE Like her departure, her tenure at the Beverly Hills courthouse was also fraught with controversy. Lawyers trying cases in her courtroom often criticized her interaction with the jurors as being unprofessional. A Los Angeles Daily Journal article stated in 1999 that Stein was under inves- tigation for allegedly sleeping on the bench and for transferring an inordinate amount of cases out of her courtroom. I remember being listed for an interview with one of the partners of a prestigious law firm. As soon as I walked in, the partner said, 'don't waste your time, don't waste my time. We are not hiring women. -- Judge Judy Stem Court officials report that if a judge resigns early, it will put a stop to an inves- tigation. Officials claim that was the reason for Stein's early resignation. It is rumored that her lawyers made a deal for her to resign early. Undisclosed sources in the article had mentioned that the 1993 and 1998 annual reports from the Commission on Judicial Performance each had a para- graph referring to Sin's misconduct although she was unnamed in the reports. "No, it's not true. Newspapers have been known to make up things," said Stein in response to the accusations. "I have no idea why they would do that." THE WOMAN WITH A GAVEL WAVES GOOD-BYE The constant barrage of recent bad press has made Stein media wary and she was quick to repeat that she didn't give interviews. However, after some persis- tent persuasion, she finally admitted to a side of herself that wasn't often seen. "Too bad my gavel has been taken home," said Stein as she placed some papers into a box. "I didn't want to forget that." As one of the first few female lawyers to graduate from law school in 1961, Stein recalled an interview she was supposed to attend. "I remember being listed for an interview with one of the partners of a presti- gious law firm," said Stein. "As soon as I walked in, the partner said, 'don't waste your time, don't waste my time. We are not hiring women." The memo- des of her first few experiences brought a laugh to Stein. "I don't like dwelling on them. Life is always a challenge," she said. Just then a bailiff walked into the room and gave Stein a quick hug." Come back and see us, we'll miss you," said teary-eyed, 21-year veteran bailiff Selina Norwood. As the chamber filled with people and the long corridor filled with echoes of goodbye, Stein knew within herself that tomorrow wasn't the first day of retire- ment. It was simply the first day of her new life. II DO YOU THINK CRIMINAL CASES SHOULD BE HEARD IN THE BEVERLY HILLS COURTHOUSE?
