2 i 'I i 5 The a corner at lAPAs 1997 Now Ruz C, elebeaUon however, approxi- mately 15,000 attended the Now Ruz celebration that was held on the football field at the high school. The following year, the Regent Beverly Wilshire offered their ball- room for IAPA's second communi- ty Now Ruz :ele- bration where Pirnia claims there was 100% participation by administration and City officials. The Now Ruz festivities have become a biannual festivity that IAPA continues to celebrate. "The reason I did this was to help children understand their culture. If these children feel their heritage is being respected and admired by the people in their environment, they will become good citizens and well-adjusted Americans," Pirnia said. "IAPA did this to make our children feel proud of who they are and to be good citizens." In 1997, the City of Beverly Hills made a proclamation of Now Ruz as a "Celebration of Spring". In the proclamation, former mayor, MaraLee Goldman wrote: "April 20th has been designated as a Celebration of Spring in Beverly Hills through the Iranian Cultural Festival of Now Ruz, embracing not only a renewal of nature, but also bonds of new beginnings, fresh hopes and the renew- al of old friendships on this special day..." Goldman also wrote a letter praising the Iranian community for its contribu- tions to the community: "I'he Iranian-American community in Beverly Hills has enriched our City's quality of life with its rich heritage; and by contributing to the cultural, educational, civic and social programs which make Beverly Hills a special place to be." CELEBRATION OF FIRE Ardavan Mofid Fire is another quintessential element in the ceremonies of Now Ruz. Chahar Shanbeh Suri, the last Wednesday of the year, is the time when fam- ilies gather bushes and dried thorns, which they arrange in three, five or seven piles to light on fire. According to Ardavan Mofid, Iranians sym- bolically put "old" things back in the winter by jumping over the fire. Iranians burn fires during this time to eliminate impurity and negativity in the coming year. "My yeiiowness, which symbolizes pain is put in the fire as a remedy of cleanliness. We put all of our malady in the fire and it gives back red- ness, representing melody, to us. As we jump over the fire we promise ourselves to change for the better," Mofid explains. In Iran, these ceremonies would be performed in the backyard or on the street. In Los Angeles, however, the community customarily gathers at a park or beach site to dance, sing and jump around the fire pits.
