sport00 Girls' Basketball Team Loses Season Finale, Hopes For Playoffs League Champion Mira Costa Tops Normans, 58-41. By Steven Herbert Beverly Hills High School's girls' basketball fell one victory short of qualifying for the Southern Section playoffs for only the second time since 1985, losing its sea- son finale to Ocean League champion Mira Costa, 58-41, Thursday night at Mira Costa. "Turnovers are what killed us," Beverly Hills coach Regina Kloes said. "[Our play- ers] really felt the pressure [to win]. They were really focused and wanted to play. For the first part of the game, it went OK, then the turnovers started coming." The Normans, who last qualified for the playoffs in 1995, led 9-7 after the first quarter, but were outscored, 23-7 in the second, trailing 32-16 at halftime. Mira Costa (17-8, 12-2 in league play)outscored Beverly Hills 17-10 in the third quarter, increasing its lead to 49-26. Gabriella Kashani's 14 points led the Normans, who lost to the Mustangs, 49-34, -\\; in the first meeting between the schools Jan. 21 at the Swim-Gym. Under Southern Section rules, teams with at least i0 victories are eligible for at- large playoff berths. The Normans finished the season 9- i 5, 6-8. Both their league and overall records include a forfeit victory over Culver City, which used an ineligi- ble player during their first meeting of the season. The nine victories tripled the total from the 1998-99 season, when Beverly Hills was 3-19. "I was very happy with how they've done," said Kloes, who completed her third season as coach.'"Since I've been here,- I haven't seen a group of girls put together everything we've done from the beginning of the season and carry it out until the end and really build onto the season and our program." Kashani and starting center Ceigal Biberstein will return next season. The team is also expected to be bolstered by several players from the league championship junior varsity team. SPORTSWIRE Boys' Basketball Team Ends Season On A High Note After losing their first I 1 Ocean League games, Beverly Hills High School's boys' basketball team closed the season by winning two of its final three. The Normans were 72-68winners at Hawthorne Feb. 8, following its 63-59 victo- ry over West Torrance Feb. 4 at the Swim-Gym. They closed the season with a 34-30 loss to Mira Costa Thursday at the Swim-Gym, in a game that was tied 28-28 in the final minute, and Beverly Hills with possession of the ball. "I was extremely pleased with our last five games," said coach Jason Newman, referring to one-point losses to E! Segundo and Torrance. "It's easy for teams who are contending for playoff spots to bring a maximum effort to every game. But it's a done deal that you're not going to make the playoffs, it's one of the goals for every coach to have your team exhibit the character necessary to compete at that level." Beverly Hills concluded the season 6-19, 2-12 in league play. High School Wrestling Beverly Hills High School senior Terry Gordy and junior Daniel Leathers qualified as alternates for Friday's Southern Section finals at Azusa High by finishing third in the Ocean League finals Friday at Peninsula.
