Beverly High Teacher Races into New Millennium . Tennis coach Susan Stevens greets 2000 in New Zealand. By Ethan Bernard While the rest of the world wait- ed to see the outcome of Y2K, Beverly High tennis coach Susan Stevens had otler worries on her mind. She would be running in a race held in Hamilton, New Zealand at 6 a.m. on New Year's Day. As New Zealand was the first industrialized nation to usher in the New Year, the race was touted as the first race of the new millenni- um. A tennis coach and P.E teacher at Beverly for almost three decades, Susan has been running and speed- walking for 22 years. In that time she has completed about 35.0 races including a couple of marathons. "At first I started running one time a week to improve my tennis game," she explains. "Now I would also cite health and socialization as what keeps me doing it, along with the fact that I just love the sport." In fact, running has kept her in touch with former Beverly students as she still Coa san S/emls just under 52 minutes, taking first place in her age division. After the race, partic- ipants were treated to a huge banquet and New Year's Eve the hotel instructed us to fill up the bathtub with water just in case the Y2K bug proved particularly harmful. -- Susan Stevens finds time to work out with them. Stevens registered over two years ago to compete in the race. Over 2,000 peo- ple hailing from 47 countries competed. Of those, there were about 650 Americans. This made for a lot of cama- raderie and intermingling during the event. However, the night before the race, participants did have a bit more to worry about than race anxiety. "On New Year's Eve the hotel instruct- ed us to fill up the bathtub with water just in case the Y2K bug proved particularly harmful," Stevens says. Although it was raining the day of the race, Stevens managed to get a time of entertainment. Also, experiencing the millennium first, they were able to sit back and watch the festivities take place around the world. As for what's coming up next, her next race took place on Super Bowl Sunday, a personal tradition. For her picks as some of the better places to run in the City, she recommends Roxbury Park along with the new tartan track at the high school. To those interested in beginning a running program she says, "the most important things is to start slowly and then to increase your running time gradually." N 6 Beverly Hills Weekly H.D., F.A.A.F.P.
