FOOD FRANKIE & JOHNNIE'S I spent my collegiate years in New York. Pizza was one of the four main food groups during this time. For those pizza lovers whose tastes lean towards the Big Apple, I have great news: Frankie & Johnnie's has come to town bringing with them the tastes and nostalgia of New York! The Original Frankie & Johnnie's, next door to Yankee Stadium is a venerable institution, serving fresh hot slices of pizza for over 42 years. Here in Los Angeles, Pink's is to hot dog lovers, as Frankie & Johnnie's is to pizza lovers in N.Y. Frankie and Johnnie, nephews of the N.Y. Frankie and Johnnie (there are over 20 "Franks" and "Johns" in the family! Are you confused yet?) brought the family recipes to the West Coast two years ago, establishing a Frankie & Johnnie's in Brentwood. It seems Los Angelinos can't get enough of a good thing. Our own Beverly Hills Frankie & Johnnie's has been open six weeks, and the pizza joint is hopping. We stopped for a quick bite during lunch hour. Stepping into Frankie & Johnnie's, just west of Rodeo drive on Little Santa Monica, you'll feel like you've been instantly transported, 3000+ miles to New York. The crowded 300 square foot dining area has patrons perched on black stools lining the walls and window facing the busy street. On the walls are scribblings left by satisfied clientele: "Best Pizza East of 405," "Best Pizza in Town", etc. I enjoyed the slice of the eggplant tomato basil ($2.75): generous toppings over a perfect ratio of sauce, cheese and crust. I recommend ordering a lunch special particularly special #2 which includes a slice of pizza, I/2 an order of salad and a regular soft drink. It is a steal at $5.95. Fresh vegetables and crispy romaine lettuce are used in the salads. On the menu are custom made cala- zones served with a side of marinara, stuffed with ricotta and mozzarella cheese ($7.95), pastas and salads, and the choice of the Standard New York Pizza or the 17" Sicilian Thick Crust Pizza (12 slices $14.50-21.95). The New York Cheesecake, Mama's own Tiramisu, and the Blackout Cake are flown in week- ly from New York. One Saturday night we ordered a "Johnnie's" Special: sautled spinach, mush- rooms and onions (Small 14"- $12.95/ Large 17"- $17.95) delivered to our home. The pie arrived in about 35 minutes. Frankie & Johnnie's delivers FREE East of Beverly Glen to Downtown Figuerora? I enjoyed the unique flavor of the "Johnnie's" Special, reminiscing with each bite! My husband preferred the pepperoni & mushroom pizza. The spicy pep- peroni was not too greasy. The mushrooms tempered the flavorful meat. The crust was flaky, baked to a golden brown. Besides the standard toppings, there are gourmet toppings (artichoke, broccoli, sun dried tomatoes, anchovy, and proscuitto ham, and more) for that special California flare. The pizza sauce is a heavily guarded family secret. What Johnnie will tell you is there is no added sugar or salt in the sauce and everything is made fresh daily. The original recipes have not been altered, though they have added the Hawaiian Pizza - topped with Canadian bacon and pineapple, and the BBQ Pizza - BBQ chicken with red onions and fresh cilantro to the menu. Frankie & Johnnie's also has a 2 for 1 special every Mon., Tues., & Wed.. This isn't your average PizzaPizza! Frankie & Johnnie's pleases the palates of diehard New York or California style pizza lovers. You may need to add this number to your speed dial!
