Thefts Plague Beverly High Campus Recent high school theft left unreported to police. By Shirin Danielpour Recent construction at Beverly High has left the doors open for two thefts in the past eight months. During this period, the high school has been robbed of approximately $50,000 worth of computer equipment and a $900 VCR. According to the Beverly Hills Police Department, four thefts were reported in the BHUSD in 1999 - two of which took place at the high school. The first one was reported in April and the following theft took place a month later, which totaled $50,000 worth of computer equipment. The investigation led to the arrest of Nicolas Mosqueda. a technician who was working for one of the con- struction subcontractors at the time, on August 4, 1999. The detectives claim that although he may have been involved in the other thefts, there is no evidence linking him to those robberies. 3mce there was no one found account- able for the crimes at the high school, the district was forced to pay for the replace- ment cost through the district's insur- ance. "We have a $5,000 deductible," prin- cipal Ben Bushman said. "When we have a theft we lose." The most recent incident at the high school took place earlier this month and resulted in a missing computer and a VCR. Although there was no official police report made it is highly suspected that employees of one of the sub-contrac- The school board is concerned about the safety of the school and is taking measures to help prevent further thefts. BHUSD employees are now required toiwear I.D badges on campus, which the board claims will help decipher employees from those who don't belong on campus. "Every worker who comes on board needs to wear some kind of identification so we can hold people accountable," Barry Brucker, former president of the school board, said. "I think it sends a ter- rific message that security goes from top on down." Ben Bushman claims that they have taken several safety measures since the initial theft in April and are continuing to work diligently at preventing future thefts.
